3rd Brentwood Bank Holiday ECF Rapid - Open to Adults & Juniors

A pleasant rapidplay open to adults + juniors, held at Brentwood School in the Wessex Auditorium. Nice venue and easy parking – Brentwood Senior School, Middleton Hall Lane, CM15 8EE.

2 sections – Time Control 20+5. ECF Rapid Rated (but not FIDE rated).

Open Section – Open to all – 1st Prize £100
Minor Section – U1200 ECF Rapid – 1st Prize £60

Day runs from 9.30am – 5pm (doors open 9am). All participants must be members of the English Chess Federation at level Silver or above if they wish to play (details on the flyer for those who are unsure).

Entry Fee £22 for everyone except Brentwood School students + highly ranked titled players. Brentwood School pupils £10. Free Entry to GMs, IMs, WGMs & WIMs.

This is an adult inclusive tournament and the organisers take no responsibility for looking after children. There will be a spacious parents waiting area for parents wishing to attend.

4 ECF-rated Sections – 10 min + 5 Sec Increment: - U18 Open: For any player up to year 13
- U18 Minor: For older players below 1000 ECF or 1200 Lichess
- U11 Open: For any players in Year 6 and below
- U11 Minor: For players without an ECF rating or rated below 800 on Lichess
- Players are free to enter a higher section if they choose
The event has sold out in 2022 & 2023 so please don’t enter too late. Click on online registration when it is available.
The highest placed Brentwood Prep student in the U11 Open will be the Prep Champion for 2024. The highest placed Brentwood student in the U18 Open will be the Brentwood School Champion for 2024.
Children in Year 6 and below must be accompanied by an adult. Older children can be left if contact details are given, although the organisers still accept no responsibility for the children between games as we will be busy running the tournament. There will be gaps between games so if parents are in doubt about their child’s ability to look after themselves between games then we recommend parents stay for the day – there will be a parents’ waiting area.

Open Section – Open to anyone
Minor Section – for players with an ECF below 1200

Entry Fee £20 (£10 for Brentwood School Students).
Doors Open: 9am, Round 1: 9.45am, Finishes at 5pm, Time Control: 20+5.

All players must be a silver member (or higher) of the English Chess Federation in order to play (it’s free for a junior to join for the first year, details on the flyer). All games will be sent for ECF rapid rating but not for FIDE rating. If ungraded you will have an opportunity to achieve your first chess grade!

Multiple prizes including £100 first prize in Open and £60 first prize in Minor.

Children Year 6 and below must be accompanied by a parent. Children Year 7 and above can be left at the parents own risk if contact details are given on entry but please bear in mind this is an adult inclusive event and the organizers will not have time to look after children between games as we will be busy running the event. There is plenty of space in the parents ‘waiting area’ and we usually have access to the school Wi-Fi, so if parents have any doubts about leaving their child unaccompanied then we suggest they stay for the day.

Sun 5 March 2023A great day’s chess in a fantastic venue for any child under the age of 18!
- 6 Rounds of ECF Rapid Rated Chess Games.
- 4 possible sections to choose from:
- U18 Open – experienced players
- U18 Minor – less experienced players (below 1000 ECF / 1200 lichess)
- U11 Open – (year 6 and below) – experienced players
- U11 Minor – (year 6 and below) – less experienced players (below 800 on lichess) - It is free to join the English Chess Federation as a junior for the first year – details on flyer.
- Day runs from 9am – 5pm with all players competiting in all rounds (it is not a knockout).
- Entry open to all junior players from any school.
The player from Brentwood Prep finishing highest in U11 Open will be the school prep champion for 2023.
The player from Brentwood Senior finishing highest in U18 Open will be senior school champion for 2023. - Year 6 pupils and below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. More flexibility amongst older children subject to meeting criteria on flyer, and if parents believe they are old enough to look after themselves. Organisers will be busy running chess and and cannot act in loco parentis between the games.

- First prize in both Open & U1300 is £60 each. Other prizes to be decided nearer the time dependent on entry.
- Prize Update – GingerGM Simon Williams is giving out 4 yearly premium packages to gchess.com. gchess.com is an excellent tool for improving your chess and its highly worth checking out their website. These 1 year membership packages will be given out to the top 2 finishers in each of the rapid sections – tie breaks will split joint scores. A yearly premium package would ordinarily cost $99 to buy.

- 60+30 time control
- Open to adults and juniors with a FIDE rating between 1500-2399 (please note our lower limit – this tournament is not for less experienced players who are advised to enter the rapidplay on Sun 28th below). Only players with a FIDE rating are permitted to play.
- We reserve the right to let in upto 3 wildcard players who don’t meet the FIDE rating criteria above – these places will be offered to people connected to the the school (pupil / people who have helped with coaching previously).
- Registration online is required
- £625 of prizes in total!
- 1st Prize £150, 2nd Prize £75, U2000 Rating Prize £50, U1800 Rating Prize £50
- Friends of chess sponsorship given prizes for top 2 females (£100/£50) and for top 2 seniors over 55 (£100/£50)

20 – 21 November 2021FIDE rated Invitational for any junior under the age of 18 and graded over 100 ECF (or 1500) and would like to get a feel for the school with a view to potentially becoming a future chess scholar. Get in touch by email if you would like an invite.
2nd Brentwood School Invitational
7 – 8 November 2020World Cup Style 16 player event – invitational only. Primarily aimed at pupils who may consider joining Brentwood school on a chess scholarship & would like a free taster. Free coaching and packed lunches provided by the school. If you are graded over 100 grade then please get in touch if you would like to experience Brentwood School with a view to possibly becoming a chess scholar. Brentwood has day and boarding facilities.
5th Brentwood U11 & U18 Championships - Major/Minor Events
Sun 1 March 2020The 5th year of the Brentwood U11 open event will this year be held in the magnificent Courage Hall in Brentwood Senior School alongside 2 x u18 events. U11 sections open to all players in year 6 and below. Free packed lunch generously donated by Brentwood School for all participants. When entering please choose one of the 4 sections below.
- U18 OPEN designed for strong chess players. The event is open to all players under the age of 18 – this section will be FIDE rated & ECF graded.
- U18 MINOR – an event for less experienced players to compete with each other. Designed for players with a chess grade lower than 80 or with no chess grade at all. ECF graded
- U11 OPEN – for experienced tournament players. ECF graded
- U11 MINOR is for players with little or no tournament experience – players must know how to play
Highest placed Brentwood School player in the U11 Open will be the Prep School Champion, whilst the highest placed Brentwoood School player in the U18 OPEN will be the senior school Champion. Ties to be decided by blitz playoff.
U14 Brentwood Invitational
9 – 10 November 201916 player invitational event for Essex and England juniors – to promote chess at Brentwood School. Guest coach GM Chris Ward – sponsored by Brentwood school.
Entry by invite only – if you are in year 7 or below & graded above 110 then feel free to contact Richard. Priority will be given to Brentwood school students and children looking at joining Brentwood school through the chess scholarship.
Summer Training Camp
19 – 20 August 2019Holiday Chess Camp for children aged 14 and under. Children can be left for the day – open to players graded between 30-170. It is an intermediate to advanced session, so I’m afraid total beginners will not be catered for. Richard & Robin are both DBS checked with teaching experience.

U100 section giving juniors a chance to improve / get a slow play grade – Juniors must be ECF Silver members (free to get the first years subscription online at the ECF website).
