We went to the Essex Junior Chess Camp for 2 days. Over that time, we learnt a lot. Firstly, we were split into three groups based on ability level and started off by doing a training session. These were about different chess skills such as attack, defence, endgames, writing moves down, openings, tactics and checkmates. We did 4 of these throughout the camp with four very experienced players coaching us.
We also played matches in teams where we would be paired with players around our level. We played 3 or 4 of these on each day, all with different time controls. These included 45 minutes each, half an hour each, 20 minutes each and 15 minutes each to get tournament experience (playing with different time controls and playing in a tournament environment). Once we had finished the matches, the coaches analysed the games with us to celebrate the good moves we had played, and to look at the moves we could improve and learn from.
At the end of the day, prizes were given out to the winning team, people who had impressed the coaches and people who were always paying attention. These included stationery, chess magazines, chess books, science books, sports equipment and a trophy for the player of the day – someone who had impressed the coaches the most.
Chess wasn’t the only thing we could do though. In the breaks between games and coaching sessions, we could climb trees, play outside and play football. There was also free juice and biscuits throughout the day. In addition to this, there were many opportunities to make new friends.
The days were very enjoyable, memorable and great for our chess skills. We give the Camp 5 stars.
